Story

About Karen Knight.

I started my career as a child and adolescent therapist in 1998.

I was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. My father died during the Covid pandemic, and my mom is dealing with dementia. I have three sisters who live across three states. Yes, I am a middle child.

I graduated from Purdue University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in two majors: Russian Language and Political Science. I met my husband while we were both students at Purdue. I moved from West Lafayette by way of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then to Bloomington to pursue additional education at Indiana University, hoping to find something that I was passionate about. I started graduate school in Counseling and Counseling Education in 1996 and graduated with my Masters in 1998.

I moved from West Lafayette by way of Ann Arbor, Michigan to Bloomington to pursue more education at Indiana University. I wanted  to find something that I was passionate about. I started graduate school in Counseling and Counseling Education in 1996 and graduated with my Master's Degree in 1998.

My first job was at Monroe County Community Corrections at an after school program designed to prevent adolescents from going to jail. It was a great experience because I learned that the Monroe County adolescent justice system was one of the best in Indiana. My next job was at Bloomington Meadows Hospital in the adolescent residential unit. I provided group, individual and family counseling, and learned a lot about mental health from the great doctors there. I then worked at The Center for Behavioral Health in Spencer in Owen County schools. I would see students at school to help them stay in school and graduate. I loved this job because I got to see the kids grow up and improve themselves. I loved the wonderful small town community in Spencer. I started my private practice in 2011, and at the same time volunteered at Volunteers in Medicine. It was at that time that I switched to seeing adults. The work I am doing now is gratifying because I can see improvements in the people I work with, sometimes during a session or over the course of a few sessions.

Starting my career as a child and adolescent therapist showed me where the problems begin, which in turn helped me better understand the needs of adults. I have also experienced many situations in life that I have learned from and which have made me a more loving person. I think that is the goal of life: to learn to love yourself and be a kind as you can to others. Unless they are hurting you and then it is boundary time!
